John Morris Obituary
John Worthington Morris, 97, passed away peacefully on November 29, 2023. He was born in Tipton, Indiana on June 1, 1926, to Vera Trittipo Morris and Ross Wellman Morris and was raised in Fortville. He proudly served in the United States Army as a munition specialist in World War II, earning a Bronze Star. He graduated from DePauw University where he was a Sigma Chi and received his master’s in history from the University of Pennsylvania.
John met Wilma (Bishop), his loving wife of over 69 years, while singing in the choir of the United Methodist church in Lakeville, where he began his teaching career. They were married on June 20, 1954, and began their life together in Indianapolis where he taught history at Broad Ripple High School. He went on to head the history department at Arlington High School from the time it opened in 1961 until his retirement.
Words cannot sum up John’s long and full life. He was a caring, loving, and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed sharing his love of history, including the history of his McCord ancestors, who founded McCordsville. He gardened, wove beautiful baskets, and always appreciated a good limerick.
John was preceded in death by his parents and sister Elizabeth DeSimone. He is survived by his wife; sister-in-law Norma Rhodes; children, Frank (Debbie), Amy (Ed Glennon), Betsy (John Lesch), and Sally; grandchildren Nathan and Andrew Morris, Opal Kesling, Keenan Joyce, Allison Lesch, Caroline Rollings-Lesch, Anna Scarbrough and Samuel Bryan; and five great grandchildren.
A private service was held at Gravel Lawn Cemetery in Fortville on December 5th. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made in John’s honor to the Indiana Historical Society. Service entrusted to Seals Funeral Home where fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at SealsFuneralHome.com
